Programme Overview

By the end of the course, learners will be able to understand and respond confidently in spoken Mandarin Chinese within a defined range of everyday, social and basic workplace situations, reaching a Foundation level of functional spoken competence (broadly aligned with HSK Level 1 and indicative CEFR A1, consolidating towards A2). The course is the first stage of a three-part Ziveka pathway (Foundation → Intermediate → Advanced) through which sustained, fluent spoken competence is progressively developed

This programme prepares learners for real-world communication and internationally recognised certification pathways, specifically the HSK 3.0 (Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi) standard administered by Chinese Testing International (CTI). The curriculum covers CEFR levels A1–A2, focusing heavily on mastering Pinyin, building a vocabulary of approximately 900 core words, and acquiring essential survival and social phrases.

Upon successful completion, learners will be able to:

Communicate effectively using foundational Chinese (Mandarin) in daily survival and social contexts.
Understand basic spoken Mandarin and master Pinyin pronunciation.
Read and write essential Chinese characters, building a core vocabulary of approximately 900 words.
Demonstrate cultural awareness of Chinese society, workplace etiquette, and social norms.
Demonstrate Foundation-level spoken proficiency, broadly consistent with HSK Level 1 and indicative CEFR A1 with elements of A2, as evidenced by a recorded final assessment task.

Assessment Structure

Student performance is evaluated through:

Assessment is predominantly formative and performance-based, prioritising spoken output over written testing. Learner performance is assessed using rubrics addressing pronunciation, tone accuracy, fluency, comprehensibility, and interactive communication.
A pass mark of 50% is required across the overall component weighting, with a minimum threshold expected in the Final Recorded Task to ensure demonstrable Foundation-level spoken competence.
