Programme Overview

Ni Hao, Kids! is an introductory spoken Mandarin Chinese programme designed for young learners aged 9 to 14. The course introduces Chinese language and culture through everyday, high-frequency vocabulary and simple conversational patterns, using a communicative, activity-based approach appropriate for the age group. Emphasis is placed on listening and speaking, with a gradual, supported introduction to Hanyu Pinyin (the Romanised phonetic system) and basic Chinese characters.

The course draws on themes familiar to young learners, greetings, family, school, colours, clothing, the body, and daily routines to build learners’ confidence and functional vocabulary in a low-pressure, engaging environment.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion, learners will be able to:

Introduce themselves in Chinese and ask a peer's name
Understand and use basic daily expressions, including greetings and courtesy words
Communicate simple information about family, school, food, hobbies, and daily life.
Recognise and reproduce a small set of basic Chinese characters
Identify the four tones of Mandarin and demonstrate awareness of Hanyu Pinyin as a reading aid
Show developing interest in, and awareness of, Chinese culture.

Teaching & Learning Approach

The programme follows an interactive, competency-based learning approach focused on real-life application:

Live online interactive sessions (via Zoom)
Structured learning supported by a Learning Management System (LMS)
Greeting circles and warm-up routines to open each session and build spoken fluency habits.
Flashcards, realia, and picture-based vocabulary presentation.
Guided listening and repetition drills, supported by short video clips and songs.
Pair and small-group speaking practice, including simple question-and-answer exchanges
Game-based reinforcement activities (e.g. matching games, hand-gesture number practice).

Progressive, low-stakes introduction to Pinyin reading and character writing from Week 12 onward.

Assessment Structure

Assessment is formative and continuous, appropriate to the age group and the spoken-language focus of the course:

Weekly participation and in-class oral tasks (informal, teacher-observed).
Short vocabulary recognition checks at the end of each unit.
A brief end-of-course oral assessment (Week 12), consisting of self-introduction and simple question-and-answer exchanges.
Learners who complete the course and attend a minimum of 80% of sessions will receive a Ziveka Online Campus Certificate of Completion for Ni Hao, Kids! – Spoken Chinese for Young Learners, Level 1.
