Spoken English for Business Communication

Programme Overview

Spoken English for Business Communication is an online course designed to develop the practical spoken-English skills that early careers  require to succeed in interviews, workplace communication and customer-facing roles. The course is delivered fully online and intended primarily for young job seekers in Sri Lanka, including school leavers, undergraduates and early-career professionals.

Entry Requirements

  • No prior knowledge of English is required.
  • Suitable for absolute beginners and those seeking foundational English language skills.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion, learners will be able to:

  • Respond fluently and coherently to common job interview questions, including behavioural and situational questions.
  • Initiate and sustain everyday workplace conversations, including greetings, small talk and telephone or video-call exchanges, using an appropriate register.
  • Handle customer service interactions, including enquiries and complaints, using empathetic and solution-focused language.
  • Participate actively in short workplace meetings, expressing and justifying opinions and managing turn-taking appropriately.
  • Deliver a short, structured presentation on a work-related topic with appropriate pacing, stress and intonation.
  • Manage difficult workplace conversations, such as giving feedback or resolving minor conflicts, using diplomatic and assertive language.
  • Demonstrate improved pronunciation, fluency and interactive communication skills, as evidenced by a recorded portfolio of speaking tasks.

Learners actively engage in practical scenarios such as basic workplace communication, travel interactions, customer service situations, and everyday conversations, ensuring confidence in real-world use.

Assessment Structure

Student performance is evaluated through:

  • Assessment is predominantly formative and performance-based, prioritising spoken output over written testing. Learner performance is assessed using rubrics addressing pronunciation, fluency, comprehensibility, and interactive communication.
  • A pass mark of 50% is required across the overall component weighting, with a minimum threshold expected in the Final Recorded Task to ensure demonstrable Foundation-level spoken competence.
