Foundation Certificate in Spoken German

Programme Overview

The Foundation Certificate in Spoken German is a 3-month (12-week) online course designed to build practical, real-world spoken German skills for learners in Sri Lanka who have little or no prior exposure to the language. The course is delivered fully online through Ziveka Online Campus and prioritises oral communication and listening comprehension over reading and writing, enabling learners to communicate with confidence in everyday, social and basic workplace situations by the end of the programme.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion, learners will be able to:

Pronounce German sounds accurately, including umlauts (ä, ö, ü), the ß, and consonant clusters such as "ch" and "sch", and be understood by a sympathetic native or fluent listener.
Initiate and sustain basic conversations, including greetings, self-introduction, and exchanging personal information, using both formal (Sie) and informal (du) registers appropriately.
Carry out everyday transactions in German, such as shopping, ordering in a café, asking directions, using public transport and buying tickets.
Participate in simple workplace or customer-facing exchanges, including basic telephone etiquette and responding to routine customer queries.
Engage in short social conversations, discussing routines, plans, preferences and simple opinions using high-frequency connectors.
Demonstrate Foundation-level spoken proficiency, as evidenced by a recorded final assessment task.
Make polite requests, apologise, and manage simple misunderstandings using appropriate diplomatic language.

The programme follows an interactive, competency-based learning approach focused on real-life application:

Live roleplay and simulation via video conferencing (e.g. shopping, travel and customer-service scenarios)
Voice-recorded assignments for independent pronunciation and fluency practice, with tutor feedback
Structured peer-practice sessions in small breakout groups
Short, targeted pronunciation drills addressing sounds not present in Sinhala, Tamil or English
Guided use of AI conversation partners for additional low-stakes speaking practice
Listening comprehension and pronunciation practice
Continuous instructor feedback on speaking and character writing

Learners actively engage in practical scenarios such as basic workplace communication, travel interactions, customer service situations, and everyday conversations, ensuring confidence in real-world use.

Upon completion, students will achieve foundational competency creating a clear pathway towards intermediate and higher proficiency levels.

The centre supports further progression through:

Successful learners are eligible to register for the Intermediate Certificate in Spoken German (targeting CEFR A2–B1), which extends and consolidates conversational range, fluency and situational complexity beyond the Foundation level
A further Advanced Certificate in Spoken German (targeting CEFR B1–B2) is recommended as the appropriate stage at which genuine conversational fluency, as commonly understood, is achieved
